Freeman Hunter Jr. 

November 20, 1946-June 7, 2026

Our beloved Freeman Hunter Jr., 79, died on June 7, 2026.

From a young age Freeman charted a direct course and set his sights on ambitious goals. Throughout his almost 80 years, he worked with an unwavering discipline and focus to support his family and forged a path of extraordinary accomplishments. To all who knew him, it was evident that his life's work was driven by a simple but profound purpose: to ensure that his children and grandchildren possessed the freedom to dream beyond any limitations. He was committed to building not just a better life for his family, but a lasting foundation upon which future generations could thrive. This legacy was built not only on what he achieved but, on the values, he embodied every day. 

Freeman Jr. graduated from Bakersfield’s East High School in 1965 and married his high school sweetheart (Cheryl). They moved to Fresno, Ca. in 1966. From this union was born two girls, Tatia and Marca. At 21, while taking business classes at Fresno City College, Freeman took ownership of a Chevron gas station, making him the youngest owner in the company at that time. In 1973, Freeman joined the Fresno Police Department. With a quiet strength as Sergeant, he led various divisions including Internal Affairs, Vice/Narcotics and the Gang Task Force Unit. Freeman retired in 2005 after 32 years of dedicated public service. He mentored, counseled and trained many individuals who have gone on to become some of Fresno’s top leaders today. 

The son of a sharecropper, Freeman never lost his connection and roots to the land, acquiring “Misery Farm” in 1979 on which he farmed grapes. But as was true to his nature, Freeman’s aspirations were always set higher. Between countless 12 hour shifts on the force, Freeman continued to invest and work in agriculture, farming 40 acres of almonds singlehandedly for over 12 years. Through his hard work and dedication, Freeman gained a reputation not only as a respected civil servant but as a successful grower among the Fresno farming community. 

In his life, Freeman loved simplicity, moments with family, talking politics, and being ever-present for those he loved most. 

Freeman leaves behind his children; Tatia Hunter-Jennings and Marca Hunter (Robert Mauldin). Grandchildren; Dr. Jaih Hunter-Hill, Kaleb-Obed Jennings and Naomi-Grace Jennings. Siblings; Margie Evans, Sam Hunter (Rennie), Linda Wagner (Vernon), Rick Hunter (Erna), Annie Holley (William), and Don Hunter along with many nieces, nephews and friends. Freeman is preceded in death by his parents Freeman Sr. and Grace Hunter and siblings; Ercie Hunter, Alyine Hunter, Will Hunter and Thomas Hunter. 

As a father and grandfather, he never missed an opportunity to demonstrate his love, support and pride. Freeman will be forever missed.
